WHAT CAUSES STUDENTS TO CHEAT ON THE EXAM?
For many students, when examinations come, they have to study harder than usual in order to get good marks for the final result of a semester or a school year. This is a necessary step to test and evaluate the study progress of students. However, in any examination, cheating is usually inevitable. The causes for this negative matter are often from the students themselves and we can mention some basic causes below.
First, most students who cheat on the exam have the same reason that they haven’t learnt by heart all the lessons. Usually, before any exam, we always have some days off to review and of course, the exam schedule is announced at about 2 or 3 weeks before the exam day. Instead of using this time to cover all the knowledge, students tend to waste it and just start to review when the exam day comes very near. Therefore, the problem is how they can put all those things into their brain in such short time. Or course, it is impossible. And when they come to the exam room, with the pressure of passing the course, they look at their friends’ paper and copy it or use materials. When there is not enough time to review, some students may think of copying the materials into small pieces of paper so that they can use it if the teachers are not so strict and don’t pay attention to them. As a result, the number of students who cheat on exams may increase due to the reason that they can’t cover all the necessary knowledge needed for the exam on time.
Moreover, another cause for cheating on exams is that some students have wrong thinking about studying in some subjects. With the subjects about society or subjects that do not directly related to the students’ job in the future, they just think they learn so as not to get the knowledge for themselves but to pass them because those are compulsory subjects. Therefore, during the course, they nearly learn nothing and the way for them to pass is cheating. When I studied at high school, some of my classmates also had this thinking when they learned some subjects such as civics, history, geography though those subjects are really important. They cheated skillfully not only in exams but also in 45 and 15 minutes tests and they said that they wanted to have more time to study the subjects they majored in. Sometimes, when the subjects are too difficult, students also have to cheat. They just think that if they don’t cheat while others cheat, it will be unfair to them and they cannot pass the exam. This thinking leads to the action of cheating although they know that it’s not good at all.
Cheating on the exam is a bad behavior for students, which is caused by not having time to review all the lessons and having negative thinking when studying some subjects. We should not have the action like this anymore to create a good environment of examination.
